Much of the tallow used in commercial products goes through industrial refining processes:
• Bleaching — uses bleaching clays or chemicals to remove the natural yellow or cream color
• Deodorizing — uses high heat and steam stripping to remove the natural scent
• Chemical processing — various solvents used to standardize the product
The result is a bright white, odorless tallow that looks clean and appealing — but has been stripped of many of the natural vitamins and beneficial compounds that made it valuable in the first place.
